Conversely, when someone's body is in a more settled state, their attention becomes more spacious almost automatically. They're not "trying harder" to be present. Their nervous system has more room to let them be.
So the arrow points both ways. Awareness seems to shape the body's biological processes, at least in some measurable cases. And the body's state constantly shapes what a person's awareness has access to. Neither one is really in charge. They're better understood as a single, continuously looping system.
Why This Matters More Than It Might Seem To
It would be easy to read a study like this and file it under "interesting but not that useful" — a nice fact for a dinner party, not something that changes how you live. I don't think that's quite right.
If awareness and the body really are in constant, mutual conversation, it changes what we're doing when we work with either one. Somatic therapy, at its core, is built on exactly this premise — that you can access nervous system change through the body, not just through insight or willpower. This study is a small but concrete piece of evidence for a mechanism that's been somewhat difficult to demonstrate empirically: that bringing calm, steady attention to what's happening in the body isn't just a coping technique. It might be a genuine input into physiological regulation.
It also reframes what's happening for people who feel chronically disconnected from their bodies — which, in my experience, is most of us, most of the time, in a culture that rewards constant output over noticing. If the loop between awareness and body needs both directions working to function well, then a person who has spent years overriding bodily signals in favour of pushing through isn't just missing out on comfort. They may be missing a whole channel of information their system needs in order to regulate itself.
When the Loop Is Working, Life Feels Different
This is the part that's harder to reduce to a single study, because it's less about a specific finding and more about a pattern I watch play out over and over in practice. When someone's capacity to notice their body — gently, without alarm — starts to come back online, something shifts that's hard to describe in clinical language. Decisions get easier. Recovery from stress gets faster. People report feeling like they have more room in ordinary moments — a conversation, a deadline, a hard conversation with a partner — that used to feel tight and reactive.
None of that requires forcing anything. It isn't about more discipline, more vigilance, more effort spent monitoring yourself. If anything, it moves in the opposite direction — toward a quieter, steadier kind of noticing that doesn't demand constant attention to sustain itself, because the system underneath it has more stability to draw on.
Where This Leaves Us
I don't think the takeaway here is a technique, exactly. It's more of an invitation to reconsider a habit a lot of us have absorbed without noticing — the reflex to override, distract from, or push past what the body is signalling, on the assumption that attention will only make things worse or that the body's signals are a nuisance to manage rather than information to work with.
The research is new, and I'd encourage some healthy caution about how far to extend a single study's findings. But it points toward something worth taking seriously: that awareness and the body aren't separate systems politely taking turns. They're in an ongoing exchange, and the quality of that exchange may matter more than we've given it credit for.
Presence, in this light, isn't just a nice-to-have. It might be one of the quieter ways the body finds its way back to stability.
